30 Days to Boston

In 30 days I will be at the start line of the Boston Marathon.

Preparing to run a marathon - any endurance race for the matter - is all about making a commitment. You can have a few bad days of training, maybe take a break here or there, but you can’t waiver from your commitment. Of all the busyness and distractions that fill our days, that commitment - the drive to overcome resistance - is the secret reason so many of us lace up our shoes and head out the door one more time.

And so we have made a commitment.

In the 30 days leading up to Boston, our goal is to raise the funds for six youth - kids who really need a hand up - to have an experience of a lifetime. They won’t be running a marathon, but they will be joining a unique outdoor program that combines skill development (rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and skateboarding) with mentoring on how to create healthy lifestyle choices.

And it's more than that; it’s about building a life-long passion for the outdoors.

We are inviting kids to get off their screens and get into the magic of exploring nature, adventure, learning, and community.

Why we care

If you focus on what you lack, you lose what you have. If you focus on what you have, you gain what you lack.
— Greg McKeown, Essentialism

Every day we read about overwhelming challenges that impact our economies, health, safety - even our future. And it can be tempting to throw our attention and blame at the problem.

Don’t you want to be a part of the solution?

We do. And we dedicate a large portion of our time and energy to supporting local non profits as directors and volunteers. It’s one way we can share our expertise and support causes we care about.

And then we looked outdoors.

When we were growing up the outdoors was a big part of our life. For Donna it was hunting, sledding, skiing, and hiking. For Hugh it was camping, hiking, whitewater kayaking and rafting, climbing and skiing. Over time, we learned skills that allowed us to explore further and take bigger risks. And those experiences shaped who we are and what we have been able to achieve.

And we want that for the next generation. They deserve it.

We believe everyone should have the opportunity to discover and explore nature and the outdoors. Beyond the problems of the world and whatever we face daily, nature is always waiting, stable, grounding, and healing. For some it is the difference between a life driven by fear and blame and one led by a higher purpose.

The programs we support go beyond simply learning to ride the local trails, or roping up to climb a rock face. The magic happens as a small group of youth - away from their cell phones and gaming stations and facing real challenges together. The lesson is not just about the outdoor skill; it’s about learning how to trust each other and trust yourself.
